The charitable work of the Misericórdia was very important throughout Portugal’s history and its church in Guimarães was built in Renaissance style at the end of the 16th century. Designed by two local architects, Gonçalo Lopes and Lopes de Amorim, one of its main features is the high altarpiece, which dates from the 18th century and is painted to imitate marble. Also worthy of note is the carved wooden organ casing, based on a design by Friar José António Vilaça and the work of local carvers.
