The small twin towered 17th century Misericórdia Church is regarded as Guarda’s most important example of Baroque architecture. The architect is unknown, but the church was built on the site of Guarda’s second cathedral, which was demolished in the 14th century. The royal coat of arms is above the ornamental portal, which has a niche at a higher level containing a jasper statue of Our Lady of Mercy. The contrast of granite and white walls is both distinctive and pleasing. The main altar of this single nave church is large and impressive.
