Situated in the historical centre of the city, opposite the City Hall, the Misericórdia Church was only built at the end of the 16th century, even though the order was founded in Covilhã in 1577. The present church is very largely an 18th century reconstruction. The façade, whilst it has some Baroque decorative features, is simple. Inside there is some fine wood carving and a 17th century altar. In the square there is a statue to the 15th century explorer and adventurer Pero de Covilhã, who was born in Covilhã.
