Founded in 1518, the Misericórdia charitable institution was located in the Holy Spirit Church (Espírito Santo), which was originally built in 1316 as evidenced by the inscription in the Santa Maria Madalena chapel. The building was altered and improved in 1539 and again in later centuries, including the addition of a hospital annexe. The tiled façade was completed in the latter part of the 19th century. The impressive 1692 carved main altarpiece, the work of Manuel de Madureira, is a notable feature. The lateral altars are from the 18th century.
