The Misericórdia Church today houses the Museum of Sacred Art and is adjacent to the Tourist Office. It was founded in the mid-16th century and was at one time part of the palace where King Manuel I (1495-1521) was born. There is a statue to the king on the outskirts of the town. The single nave church has 18th century painted wooden ceilings and the main chapel still has its original 1588 altar piece, painted by Diogo Teixeira and Antonio da Costa. There is a pillory across the road.
