The Misericórdia Chapel was a former Arab mosque. The building, converted to a Christian place of worship and restored in 1499, is also known as the Governors’ chapel. Although it was damaged in the 1755 earthquake, the body and main doorway were restored in the original Gothic style. The interior has a carved wooden altar piece supporting an image of Our Lady of the Visitation. It also contains the tomb of Rui Dias who was assumed to be one of the Governors of the Castle.
