The town derives its name from the Arab occupation in the 8th century, when it was called ‘Mir Andul’. A strategic defensive castle built in the 12th century by King Afonso Henriques was destroyed in 1762 by a powder room explosion; but the keep remains. Near the cathedral there is a baroque arcaded courtyard belonging to the Archbishop’s Palace, burned down in 1706. Other places to visit include the ‘Queen of the Mirandeses’ Sanctuary and about three km east, the Barragem de Miranda do Douro, the first of a series of five dams operated jointly by Portugal and Spain.
