Mira was founded by the Romans and later settled by the Moors who called it Mir or Emir, from which its present name was derived. Tourism has recently developed, principally at Praia de Mira, about 7 km to the north (see separate entry). The parish church dates from 1690 and has fine painted ceilings and azulejo tiling; it is adjacent to the Mira garden with its pretty fountain. Boating and water sports on the Barrinha lagoon are an attraction, as is the wooded reserve of the Mata Nacional das Dunas de Mira. Fishermen will find barbel, carp, rock-bass, sea-bream and grey mullet.
