The unusual and well presented Museu do Trabalho Michel Giacometti in the Largo Defensores da República is located in an old fish canning factory adapted for the purpose. It is a municipal museum and was opened in 1987, but, after the death of Michel Giacometti in 1991, changed its name to honour its founder. The Museum received an honourable mention in the 1998 Council of Europe Museum awards. Apart from the display of industrial machinery etc.associated with the fish canning and lithographic industries, there is a unique collection of tools and agricultural implements and a complete 1920s Lisbon grocery.
