Portugal’s first Geopark, the Naturtejo da Meseta Meridional, covers an area of 4,625 square kilometres (1,786 square miles). It encompasses Castelo Branco, Idanha-a-Nova, Nisa, Olerios, Proenca-a-Nova and Vila Velha de Rodao and also includes the Tejo International Nature Park (see separate entry). A Geopark is a protected area containing geological heritage sites and achieves its aims through conservation, education, tourism and sustainable development. The offices of the park in Castelo Branco can provide details of an extensive network of sign-posted trails which are broken down into themes such as fossils, mines and rock art.
