The Menhir of Outeiro (a large upright standing stone), found northwest of Monsaraz, is six metres high and is the biggest in Portugal. It was discovered lying on its side in 1964 and was later lifted up and restored. It is typical of its type, being phallic in shape (uneven and tapering towards the top) with inscriptions at the top. Menhirs are widely distributed across Europe and originate from many different periods across pre-history, and were erected as part of a larger Megalithic culture. Take the dirt road from the Barrada chapel; between Motrinos and Outeiro.
