The Menino de Deus Church was commissioned by King João V (1706-1750) in fulfilment of a vow. Consecrated in 1737, it replaced a convent church where there was a small statue of Jesus (Menino de Deus), after which the church was named. The design is attributed to the architect João Antunes, the outstanding inside decoration being to the king’s taste. Note the multi-coloured marble decoration, the carved and gilded woodwork and the paintings by André Gonçalves. Two Baroque paintings have been restored, ‘St Francis giving up his clothes’ by Vieira Lusitano and ‘St. Joseph and the death of St. Francis’ by André Rubira.
