Built in 1760 to commemorate the escape by King Jose I from an assassination attempt on the site in 1758, this small but beautiful church with its white dome is reminiscent of the larger Estrela Basilica. Designed in neo-classical style by Mateus Vicente, who was also involved with the Estrela and the Palace of Queluz, it contains the tomb of Marquês de Pombal, who was Jose’s minister responsible for the rebuilding of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake.
