On this beach in 1832, troops led by Pedro IV disembarked to expel his brother, Miguel from the Portuguese throne. A commemorative obelisk was erected and the beach was renamed; it was called Arenosa or Ladrões. Children love playing in the park here or in the sheltered pools on Marreco beach to the north. Strong waves attract surfers and body boarders. Designated an EEC blue flag beach, it has facilities for the disabled and lifeguards on duty in season. The average summer seawater temperature is 16º C and parking is available. There are bars and restaurants and umbrellas can be hired.
