Melgaço is in the heart of the cool and luxuriantly green region and is a useful gateway to the Peneda-Gerês National Park. There are a number of tourist attractions in the town and the surrounding area (see separate entries) but there are additional items of interest. The Parish Church of Santa Maria da Porta, the Misericórdia Church with its beautiful porch, the small chapel of Santo Cristo and the Convento das Carvalhiças that once belonged to the Franciscan Order, are all worth a visit. Wander through the labyrinth of narrow streets and absorb the history of Melgaço.
