Melgaço Castle, strategically situated close to the Spanish border, was built in the 12th century by Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. It was built circular, which is unusual for Portugal and the town developed around it, with its own protection walls being built in 1263 by King Afonso III. The keep, or Torre de Menagem, can be visited and has an exhibition of objects relating to the town, dating back to pre-historic times. The view from the top is magnificent. Little remains of the old town walls.
