Mealha is in the area of Algarve countryside known as Barrocal. First inhabited by prehistoric man, the region is rich in archaeological finds. Perched on the hill of Mealha are two dolmens, the Anta das Pedras Altas and the Anta da Masmorra. In Mealha itself are the Round Straw Lofts, which are circular constructions made from loose stone and earth, with thatched roofs, which were once used as homes. A wealth of information on the history of the area can be found at the Mealha Rural World Discovery Centre, which also has details of walking tours.
