The Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar were discovered in the nineteenth century. This world-famous site is an important Neolithic/Chacolithic burial ground (from 2,000 B.C. to 1,600 B.C.) with graves of several types, from megalithic chambers to tombs with false cupolas and side alcoves. The prehistoric remains include a series of megalithic funerary temples, dolmens, a central settlement and five peripheral ones. The Reception and Study Centre shows the daily life of the inhabitants of the Algarve in ancient times, who engaged in such diverse activities as agriculture, the shepherding of flocks, hunting, fishing, milling, weaving, pottery making and working with copper.
