At the end of the Águas Livres Aqueduct is the Mãe d’Agua Reservoir, the largest reservoir of the system. The castle-like structure was designed by the Hungarian architect Carlos Mardel in 1745, it had a capacity for 5,500 cubic metres of water but was only completed in 1834. There is a 7 metre deep well, a waterfall and a terrace with a panoramic view of the city. Decommissioned, the space is now used for art exhibitions, fashion shows and other cultural events. At one time it was a popular meeting place and a rendezvous for kings and their mistresses.
