The Matosinhos Town Hall was inaugurated in 1987 and was the first Portuguese institutional building constructed after the April 25 1974 revolution. The so called ‘Carnation Revolution’ effectively changed Portugal from authoritarian dictatorship to democracy and this building symbolises the independence from central government gained by local authorities. It is considered a reference point in Portuguese architecture and was designed by leading architect Alcino Soutinho who has subsequently designed the Municipal Library and the revamping of the Aveiro museum. The architect was also responsible for the layout of the surroundings and is regarded as having achieved perfect balance.
