Near the railway station, in the former cloisters of the 17th century São Francisco church, is the Matchbox Museum, called locally Museu dos Fosforos. An unusual and interesting museum, it claims to house the largest matchbox collection in Europe, displaying some 43,000 boxes from 104 different countries and more than 2,000,000 matches. There are many themes in the collection, such as that of musical instruments from Germany. Unusual items include a 40 centimetre long match, a silver matchbox and one in the form of a light bulb. Collectors of matchboxes incidentally are known as phillumenists.
