Situated in Massarelos, near the Crystal Palace, the Igreja do Corpo Santo dates from 1776, the third church on this site. It belongs to the Confraternity of the Souls of the Holy Body of Massarelos, founded, it is said, in 1394 by seamen saved from a storm; Prince Henry the Navigator is alleged to have been a member. The statue in the niche on the twin-towered and tile decorated façade is of the patron saint, São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo. The Brotherhood’s treasury houses a beautifully crafted 16th century monstrance amongst other silver items.
