Marvão owes its name to Ibn Marúan, a Moorish warrior from the 9th century. Geographically, Marvão is marked by steep slopes to the north, south and west. Access on foot is only possible from the east. The town played a major role in all the military conflicts from 1299 to the Peninsular Wars (1807-11). It has narrow streets lined with beautiful houses made from the local granite and featuring Gothic arches, Manueline windows and wrought-iron balconies. The view over the surrounding region is outstanding. The best vantage point is the top of the castle’s high keep (Torre de Menagem).
