In the early 14th century the Igreja de Santiago and the nearby Igreja de Santa Maria (now the Municipal Museum) were the parish churches of Marvão. They both belonged to the Order of the Hospital. The church’s structure and decoration is Gothic in style. Inside are three naves, with an impressive wooden masseira ceiling. On the left is a Gothic chapel, with ribbed vaulting, embellished by an 18th century altar of carved wood. On the right is another chapel, decorated with Estremoz marble and 17th and 18th century azulejos.
