The Martins Sarmento Museum is owned by a cultural society of the same name, founded in 1881. It was opened in 1885 and is named after the archaeologist who excavated major Iron Age sites. Housed in the cloisters of the 14th century Gothic São Domingos Convent, the museum is considered pre-eminent in regard to Portuguese pre-roman culture. Amongst the items on display are a rare pair of Lusitanian warriors, the Pedras Formosas (two stone slabs inscribed with figures) and a bronze ox-cart offering. Standing 3 metres tall, the Colossus of Pedulva stone statue cannot be missed.
