Archaeological evidence shows that the area of Martim Longo was inhabited as far back as Roman times, but it expanded rapidly between the 16th and 18th centuries. The main church, as with so many in Portugal, was originally a mosque, of which only the minaret remains, and even this was converted to a belfry. The cylindrical buttresses are probably of Moorish origin, too. The interior consists of three naves separated by ogival arches. The columns have inverted truncated pyramidal capitals, a Byzantine style rare for Portugal. The church houses gilded vestments from the 16th to 18th centuries and holy objects in silver.
