The Maritime Traffic Control Tower of the Port of Lisbon is located on a flat promontory and isolated from other buildings. A striking building, situated on the incline towards the Tagus River; it is a 38 metres high stone, copper clad structure, which was inaugurated in 2001. It manages navigation within the jurisdiction area of the Authority of the Port of Lisbon and is equipped with the latest technology to control shipping up to 16.5 nautical miles. The architect was Gonçalo Byrne whose other projects include the Faro Theatre in the Algarve, and the National Museum Machado de Castro, in Coimbra.
