Housed in the north and west wings of the Jerónimos Monastery, the Maritime Museum was inaugurated in June 1959. Having regard to the period of Portuguese domination of the seas, this museum is one of the most important in Europe. The collection was started in the 18th century and now contains more than 17,000 exhibits; an adjacent pavilion displays the royal barges. Additional attractions include map replicas and extensive archives of photographs and ships’ drawings and plans.
