A small but interesting maritime museum is housed in part of the harbour master’s building. Whilst it focuses on the Age of Discovery, there are also models of local fishing craft, the square-rigged nau (the forerunner of the galleon) and other exhibits that provide a background to the sea and fishing in the Algarve. There is a model of Vasco da Gama’s flagship the São Gabriel, another of a boat used to sail up the river Congo in 1492 and one of the vessel that defeated the entire Turkish navy in 1717.
