The Maritime Museum is in the town of Ílhavo about 6 km south of Aveiro. Founded in 1937, it has, since 2001, has been located in a new modern building. The three permanent exhibitions cover trawling, the Ria de Aveiro lagoon and a section devoted to fishing equipment and miniatures of fishing boats. The regions long seafaring history is permanently recorded from the crafts of the lagoon, to coastal fishing and those who earned their living in the seas of the far northern Atlantic. There are also collections of marine algae and seashells from around the world.
