Located about 23 km northeast of Trancoso, above a village of the same name, are the remains of the medieval citadel of Marialva. The castle was rebuilt by King Sancho II of Portugal in the 13th century. It is said that the town’s fortunes were linked to the Távoras family and, as a result of their feud with the Marques de Pombal in the 18th century, the village was abandoned. Today the granite walls exist with a central keep, some towers, the ruins of dozens of homes, the roofless parish church in the town square and a striking 15th century pillory.
