The reservoir formed by the Maranhão Dam dates from the 1950s and was designed to provide irrigation for the surrounding region, but it is also a tourist attraction for a number of different water sports, as well as being an ideal place to fish. Facilities include: a river beach, restaurants and a nautical club. There are several viewing points (miradouras) around the dam, allowing you to enjoy magnificent views over this artificial lake and the surrounding Alentejo countryside resplendent with pine and eucalyptus trees.
