A visit to the Manueline St Michael’s Parish Church is strongly recommended. The construction was ordered by King Manuel I (1495-1521) to replace an old 13th century Gothic chapel, but building carried on for nearly a century. An intricate 16th century Baroque portal in a heavily buttressed façade, leads into what has been likened to a magnificent, scaled down version of the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon. The altarpiece is outstanding and its panels, including a beautiful Annunciation, are attributed to Grão Vasco (1475-1540). Although the interior has been enriched on various occasions, the essential Manueline character has never been lost.
