Located about 27 km north of Covilhã in the heart of the Serra da Estrela, Manteigas is in the Zêzere valley and has a magnificent setting. The Manteigas Spa, which goes back to Roman times, lies just south of the town. The waters are sulphurous, bicarbonated, sodic and fluorinated with a pH level of 9.5 and temperature of 45 ºC. It is recommended for the treatment of diseases of the respiratory system, rheumatic and musculo-skeletal diseases and dermatological pathologies. There are both preventive and regenerative treatment programmes. The spa has facilities for the disabled and accommodation in season.
