Rua Olimpio Nicolau Rui Fernandes, Coimbra 3000 - Portugal

This well proportioned and most unusual garden is to the east of the Santa Cruz monastery complex and is all that is left of a 16th century cloister designed by the French Renaissance artist Jean de Rouen for King Joao III. It gets its name from the fact that the king sketched the design on his sleeve, manga being the Portuguese for sleeve. The domed fountain in the centre is buttressed by four small circular chapels; originally these were surrounded by water and accessed by drawbridge which, when raised, would ensure the meditation of the monks was undisturbed.
