Malveira is a small town about 11 km east of Mafra, which every Thursday morning stages the region’s biggest market. This market grew from the annual fair, which started in the late 18th century, where cattle were sold and bartered mainly to Lisbon customers. The market was hugely popular and became a weekly event which, with the advent of the railway, attracted dealers from all over the country. Nowadays just about anything can be bought and sold, with the emphasis on clothes, household goods and food. Whilst in Malveira do try the local pastries and notice the windmills on the hills.
