No visitor to Porto should fail to visit the Majestic Café in the Rue Santa Catarina, a city landmark. Established in 1921 and designed by architect João Queirós, this café is an architectural jewel which has been meticulously restored. Marble walls, gilt framed mirrors, sculptured cherubs and ornate Art Deco décor abound, shared by both locals and tourists. It was here, according to Sean Smith’s biography, that J K Rowling sat for many days whilst living in Porto, writing ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’. There is also terrace seating and an interesting rear courtyard with a stone staircase flanked by Italian statuary.
