The original church of Alcantarilha was built in the 16th century and the Manueline main chapel survives from this earlier structure. In the 18th century a carved and gilded retable was added. The baptismal chapel has a 17th century ashlar tiled with azuelos and, in the sacristy, is a wonderfully carved 18th century chest, above which there is a niche decorated with acanthus leaves. Adjoining the church is a Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones). The walls and ceiling of this gruesome chapel are clad with approximately 1,500 skulls.
