The monastery, built for 330 Franciscan monks of the Arrábida Order, is located in the rectangle of buildings behind the Basilica and Royal Palace. It was also occupied by the St Augustine Hermit Friars from 1771-1791. Following the dissolution of religious orders in 1834, the monks abandoned the buildings, which were handed over to the military. There is a pharmacy and a small hospital equipped with bizarre instruments, where patients could see and hear mass. In 1754 the Mafra School of Sculpture was established under Alessandro Giusti (1715-1800), which trained many famous Portuguese sculptors, including Joaquim Machado de Castro (1731-1822).
