The Royal Palace is located symmetrically on either side of the Basilca and has more than 650 rooms occupying the rest of the west elevation. The onion domed square block of the King’s quarters, is matched by a similar block, the Queen’s quarters, some 250 metres away. The rooms are exceptionally furnished and contain an important collection of paintings, many to royal order. The bizarre Sala dos Troféus features hunting trophies, furniture fashioned out of antlers covered with deerskin and candelabra also made from deer antlers. The palace was only occupied spasmodically, mainly by those interested in hunting.
