The Mafra National Game Park (Tapada Nacional de Mafra) is some 2,000 acres in extent and the entrance is 9 km northwest of Mafra. Created during the reign of King João V, it was used for recreation and hunting by members of the royal family and the court. The park is home to wild boar, foxes, various species of deer and birds of prey and is excellent for walking. It has facilities for horse riding, archery, crossbow shooting and mountain biking. There is a museum and a tourist train operates at weekends and on public holidays.
