The Madeira Ethnographic Museum is located in Ribeira Brava, approximately 18 km west of Funchal. The building, a former sugar cane/ rum mill, was designed by the Madeiran architect João Francisco Caires and opened to the public in June 1996. The museum displays ethnological objects covering the full spectrum of social economic and cultural aspects of society in the Madeira Archipeligo. The exhibits are diverse including items such as a water mill, spindle press, grocery shop, clay figures, agricultural implements, fishing related items and those concerned with viticulture. The various rooms are themed and temporary exhibitions are also staged.
