Madalena’s position facing Faial and the town of Horta has made it, since its initial settlement period, the port for links with the neighbouring island. The most important monument is the 17th century parish church, which dominates the centre of the town. Madalena is a friendly little town with a charming old harbour from where beautiful views over the Atlantic and the tiny islets of Deitado and Em Pé can be enjoyed. The best place to watch seabirds and whales is Ponta do Arieiro just southwest of the harbour. From here you also can scan the small islands of Ilhéu Deitado and Ilhéu Em-Pé.
