Madalena Church, also known as the Church of São João de Deus, is situated on the left bank of the Tâmega River, close to the Roman bridge. Built and maintained by King João VI, whose coat of arms appears at the main door, this is now the parish church of Madalena, which was created in 1969 as only the second parish of the town. Originally designed as a chapel for the military hospital next door, the church has elements of both baroque and neoclassic design. The height of the façade makes it easy to miss the fine high-level sculptures.
