Machico is located about 20 km northeast of Funchal. Its 15th century Parish Church in the main square is dedicated to Our Lady of Conception. The church is a mixture of styles and has been considerably altered over the ages. The Gothic portal on the south side with its pointed arches has three marble columns donated by King Manuel I (1495-1521), who also donated the statue of the Virgin Mary above the high altar. Other notable features are the painted wooden ceilings and the Manueline style stonework in the St John the Baptist chapel.
