The historic town of Machico, 20 km northeast of Funchal, has a number of attractions in addition those separately listed. Legend has it that in about 1344 a shipwreck here was the forerunner to the discovery of Madeira by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira. There are two forts, erected as protection against pirates, the 17th century São João Baptista and the restored 18th century Nossa Senhora do Amparo. The São Roque fountain and the small 16th century São Roque chapel are also worth visiting, the latter has fine azulejo tiling. The harbour is a reminder of fishing’s importance to Machico.
