Located near the airport and approximately 20 km northeast of Funchal, the lovely bay of Machico has a great beach for both swimming and sunbathing. As usual in Madeira the beach is pebbled, it has lifeguards on duty, changing rooms and a first aid centre. Pedal boats, sun beds and umbrellas can be hired and there are good car parking facilities. The beach is used for both volley ball and football and has several swimming pools. A pedestrian promenade runs behind the beach and there are restaurants and bars.
