The Machado de Castro National Museum is named after the 18th century master sculptor Joachim Machado de Castro. The museum is housed in the 16th century former bishop’s palace. It contains some of Portugal’s finest sculptures, including Master Pero’s ‘Virgin and Child’, Flemish and Portuguse paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries, and many other varied objects. Of particular interest is the Criptoportico de Aeminium, a maze of underground passages containing a collection of Roman sculpture and Visigothic artefacts.
