The Macao Cultural Museum is part of a Science and Culture Centre which has the aims of encouraging the study of Macanese history, culture and society, the dissemination of knowledge of the former Portuguese colony and improving Portuguese-Chinese relations. The colonisation of Macao lasted for 442 years from 1557 until it was handed back to China in 1999. The museum is the only one dedicated to Macao outside the People’s Republic of China and the Special Administrative Region of Macao. It concentrates on firstly, Macanese history and culture and secondly, Chinese art.
