Luz is a pretty village with whitewashed houses facing the sea and the green heights of Caldeira in the background. The Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, a 17th century building which underwent reconstruction in the 18th century, is well worth visiting. The ceiling of the chancel is particularly noteworthy, as is the high altar with its beautiful sculptured woodwork. Located as it is below the crater, Luz provides some beautiful views across the south coast, where the precipitous white cliffs at Ponta Branca reach heights of almost 300 metres.
